Deep body · Bright trim
Navy blue house with white trim: pairings that work
A navy body with crisp white trim is a classic coastal and colonial combination. The deep blue makes the white trim pop and gives the house a confident, finished look.
Navy reads very differently in shade and sun. On a north-facing house it can look nearly black; in strong afternoon sun it brightens to a clear blue. Test it on the side that gets the least light.

Moody and modern: black door and shutters against near-black blue.
Why white trim works with navy
Navy is a low-value (dark) color, so a light trim gives you strong value contrast. That contrast is what makes windows and rooflines look crisp from the street. Off-whites with a little warmth soften the effect; bright whites make it sharper and more nautical.
Front door colors for a navy house
- Mustard or gold: complementary to blue, cheerful and welcoming.
- Red or cranberry: classic and traditional.
- Natural wood: warm, and it pairs with stone or brick.
- Black: understated and modern.
- White: a quiet option if your trim is already very bright.
Roof and fixed materials
Charcoal and black shingles are the easiest pairing with navy. Warm brown roofs can clash with a cool navy; if you have one, consider a warmer, greyer blue. Red brick works well with navy if the trim is a creamy white rather than a stark one.
Light, fading and upkeep
- Dark blues can fade faster in strong sun, especially on south and west walls. Choose a quality exterior paint and expect to refresh sooner than a light color.
- Check your siding manufacturer’s guidance on dark colors (some vinyl can warp under dark paint).
- Paint a large sample (at least 2 by 2 feet) on two sides of the house and look at it morning and evening.
Test it before you paint
Screens are not paint, and outdoor light changes everything. Narrow it down here, then brush large samples (at least 2 by 2 feet) on the sunny and the shady side of your house and look at them in the morning and late afternoon.
Questions
Does a navy house look too dark?
It can on a small or heavily shaded house. A lighter, slightly greyer blue keeps the look without the heaviness. Bright white trim and a light-colored door also lift it.
What color shutters go with a navy house and white trim?
White shutters keep the look light and coastal. Navy shutters (same as the body) are subtle. Black shutters add drama. Avoid a second blue that is close to the body color, which tends to look like a mismatch.
