White house with black trim: how to get the look right
A white body with black trim is the most graphic exterior you can choose. The dark outlines draw every window, gable and corner, so the shape of the house reads from the street even on a grey day.
It suits modern farmhouses and colonials especially well, but it also sharpens up a plain ranch. The two decisions that make or break it are which white you choose and how much trim you paint black.

Body vs trim contrast: 14.0 : 1 · body reads warm. A slightly warm white keeps the black from looking harsh; a wood-tone door adds warmth.

Crisp and modern; best in softer northern light.
Pick a white that is not too cold
In full sun a stark, blue-leaning white glares and makes black trim look severe. A white with a little warmth (a touch of yellow or grey) holds up better outdoors. Very bright whites tend to suit houses that face north or sit under trees.
Hold the white up against your roof and any brick or stone. If those are warm browns or tans, go creamier. If they are cool greys, a cleaner white works.
Decide where the black goes
- Window frames and sashes: the biggest impact and the most common choice.
- Fascia, soffits and gutters: black here frames the roofline and makes the house look sharper; white here keeps it softer.
- Corner boards: black corners outline the house and look modern; white corners blend into the body and look more traditional.
- Shutters: black shutters on a white house are a classic colonial look. Skip them on a modern farmhouse.
- Garage door: black makes it a feature; white lets it disappear.
Front door ideas
A black door is the safest choice and the most consistent with the trim. A natural wood or wood-look door adds warmth. A deep red, teal or mustard door gives a single strong accent without fighting the contrast.
What to watch for
- Black trim shows dust, pollen and chalking more than mid tones. Plan to wash it.
- Very dark paint heats up in direct sun. Check that your siding and trim materials are rated for dark colors (some vinyl is not).
- Thin black trim on a busy house can look fussy. If you have lots of small trim pieces, consider soft black or charcoal.
Test it before you paint
Screens are not paint, and outdoor light changes everything. Narrow it down here, then brush large samples (at least 2 by 2 feet) on the sunny and the shady side of your house and look at them in the morning and late afternoon.
Questions
Is black trim on a white house going out of style?
High-contrast exteriors have been popular for years, and the combination has deep roots in traditional colonial and farmhouse design. It is less likely to look dated if you use a warm white and keep the black to windows and key trim.
Should gutters be black or white on a white house with black trim?
Either works. Black gutters outline the roof and match black fascia. White gutters disappear against a white body and suit a softer look. Match whichever color you use on the fascia behind them.
